Northern Shoveler [Anas clypeata] ~ 2016 #44

I did miss last Monday’s post as I took the Victoria Day weekend off from blogging. It was a good weekend consisting of a little bird watching (including finding a new spot, admiring ducklings/goslings and finding a lifer!), house cleaning, organizing the past few months’ pictures (an important task which I’ve fallen behind), playing video games (ie- Minecraft with my son) and (after my son went to bed) binge watching Season 5 of Game of Thrones. So now my internal battery is recharged a bit, and my stuff is (a little) more organized so back to my regular Mon, Wed, Fri posting.

At the end of March we went to Reifel on a beautiful sunny day and it’s there I added my 44th bird of the year. These dabbling ducks are very recognizable based on their beak size alone!  The male has a glossy green head, white chest and chestnut flanks while the female could almost be mistaken for a female mallard, until you see the beak that is.

This picture below, taken last fall, turned out a little darker than I would have liked, the sun was on the wrong side of the bird. However I like how it shows the blue and green in the wings that is normally not seen.
