My first visit to the George C Reifel Bird Sanctuary was about 3 years ago. That was also the first time that I had seen Sandhill Cranes (here’s a link to the Reifel’s site on Sandhill Cranes). There’s at least a half a dozen Sandhill’s around, usually looking for handouts amongst the ducks and the geese. They don’t seem shy at all around all the people, in fact some of them will even eat out of your hand, although I wouldn’t try to get close to them around nesting season!
Such beautiful birds, and what a great opportunity to get a close up view of these statuesque creatures. On this visit we saw three of them being pretty low key and actually just laying (sitting?) down beside the water. There were some areas blocked off with warnings to stay away from the Crane’s nesting sites. One day I’d love to see some babies (colts), I’ve seen pictures and they are so cute.

This is one way to get to see them. Thanks for sharing.
