Bald Eagle [Haliaeetus leucocephalus] ~ #83

We are three weeks into 2016 and I’m almost finished documenting the birds I was able to “capture” in 2015. I haven’t posted for a few days now as I just got a new computer and am getting familiar with Windows 10, as well as downloading all my programs and transferring over my data. It’s certainly time consuming but think I’m pretty much set up now. But I digress…

The 83rd bird I captured in 2015 was the stoic Bald Eagle. I’m surprised I didn’t get a picture of this raptor earlier in the year, as they are not uncommon in the area.

At the end of November is the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival about 2 hours out of Vancouver. This time of year Eagles congregate to feast on the salmon runs. I took this picture above and initially was taking a picture of the scenery on this beautiful sunny day. It wasn’t until I got home that I noticed how many Eagles were in this shot (along with some Swans, Seagulls and a few ducks)

It was my first year going and didn’t get too many good shots, most birds were at quite a distance or obstructed by branches. Next year I’ll make sure I get out earlier in the day and explore more locations, but we were a little late getting started on this day.

The following weekend I took a trip to Reifel and found a few Eagles during my few hours there. These two below were spotted high on a tree just where the path branches off by the entrance. It seems to be a popular perch as I’ve seen the Eagles hanging here before.
