It was a sunny chilly day in November and I had the day to myself so I took my time walking around Reifel. I brought a sandwich and stopped at a bench at the end of the trail to eat it. The ducks thought I was going to share with them so I had lots of feathered friends joining me (no sandwich for them though, but I did throw them some seed after I was done). I happened to look up and noticed someone circling high above me. I had to hide my sandwich from the ducks, quickly grabbed my camera and attempted some aerial shots.
I wasn’t sure what kind of raptor it was, although I ruled out an Eagle, based on the wingspan. It wasn’t until I got home, zoomed in on the photos and did some research that I was able to id the Rough-legged hawk. The give away for this ID was the light coloured chest with the dark brown belly. I hadn’t identified one of these birds before so I was happy to add this raptor to my catalogue.
