Usually when we make a visit to Stanley Parks’ Lost Lagoon we venture over to Second Beach. On this day we encountered some Barrow’s Goldeneye. I did not see this species last year so Barrow’s is #95 on my overall list. The males are white & black and have a swoosh of white on their cheeks while the females are a more subdued grey/brown body with a solid brown head.

The common goldeneye is very similar but instead of the sploch of white, it’s more like a circle of white on the male’s faces. The females are very similar although the beak of the Barrow’s is more yellow.
