Common Goldeneye [Bucephala clangula] ~ 2017 #01

The first bird I officially captured this year was the lovely Common Goldeneye.

The picture below is actually the first capture of the year. My son and I had gone to Ambleside (to catch some Pokémon) and I brought my camera along. When I took this shot below I didn’t really know what I was capturing, it wasn’t until I got home and zoomed in on the image that I was able to pick out the Goldeneye. I’m not really up on my gull id’s otherwise they’d be the first on the list.

I really wanted to find a better picture though so instead of just looking through my archives I decided to see if I could find another one on the following weekend. I used e-bird to tell me where it had been sighted recently and it seemed Ambleside was the most convenient. So I returned and was happy to see one lone Goldeneye hanging out close to the beach.

The picture below, of the female Goldeneye, was taken last March at Burnaby Lake.  I like the contrast of her light eyes vs her chocolate brown head.
