Last weekend my son and I took a trip to the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Abbotsford. One of my favorite parts of going to the zoo is seeing the Radical Raptors show. I’m going to highlight the three gorgeous birds we saw in three parts. I’m not counting these birds on my 2015 list because I don’t think that captive birds count.
For today’s posting I want to introduce to you to Hagrid, the Great Horned Owl. Hagrid has been raised by hand since he was a chick, and they say he thinks he’s a human. He’s an awesome showman and flies around just over the heads’ of the spectators.

Hagrid also does seem to have a bit of an attitude as this picture above would indicate. He is well trained but he also kind of takes his time and seems to move when he feels like it. Such a beautiful raptor. I’m still working on my in flight shots, and used the burst setting on my camera, but still couldn’t quite capture a clear flight image.

Hagrid works well with the public and at the end of the show you can have an opportunity to get a picture with this lovely bird. The first time we did this a few years back my son held Hagrid. This year I told Mac that it was my turn and I couldn’t resist having a chance to hold him, even if it was just for a moment. I did have to resist the urge to reach out and pet him, so I just said hi to him and told him what a beautiful bird he was, I think he knows
