I thought I had only identified 5 species for my 2015 list on that sunny day in June at Colony Farm, when in fact it was 6! (Almost 7 even, because I got a picture of what I’m pretty sure is a Flycatcher but can’t quite get an EXACT id on it – think I’ll do a post down the road of “the ones that got away”) We were walking back to the car when I noticed a Northern Flicker in the top of a tree on the other side of the river. These birds are pretty popular both in the Lower Mainland and as well as in Lillooet. In fact there is at least one that lives in my neighbourhood as I hear it almost every day. It was probably the one I spotted on the schools’ lawn on the last day of school when I was dropping my son off. He was foraging in the grass for a while, and then flew off into the tall trees, flashing his orange tail feathers as he left.
Last spring I saw one foraging in the grass right outside my door on one of my Lillooet trips. He wasn’t too shy and didn’t seem to mind when I grabbed my camera and returned to snap a few shots. Another road trip tomorrow, wonder if I’ll see another one of these to add to my pictorial repertoire.
