Western Tanager [Piranga ludoviciana] ~ #70

I first spotted this bird last year but got no good pictures of it. One of those birds that likes to stay high in the tree tops, or if it is perched lower it seems to fly away as soon as I raise my camera to take aim.

I know they can be found in the lower mainland but I’ve only spotted them while on my Lillooet road trips. I love their orangey-red head on their yellow body. Quite a handsome fellow.

This little juvenile (below) didn’t know what to make of me. Actually I almost didn’t spot this little one as I was walking down a little patch, and next thing you know I was almost eye-to-eye with him. Had to slowly back up a few steps and cautiously bring my camera up thinking that he’d be spooked and dash away. But he just stood his ground on his branch, watching my every move. Was lucky to catch a few shots before he flew off.
