I was looking at photos from the people I follow on Flickr, and noticed a few pictures of baby Pied-billed Grebes at Burnaby Lake. I’d seen the adults before but had not seen a chick, other than in pictures. So on one sunny August afternoon we took a trip to Burnaby Lake to see if we’d have any luck spotting one.

It was my lucky day as we did indeed spot a youngster. I’m guessing it was more of a juvenile by now, but it was still a nice find! I watched it for a while as it caught a tadpole, but instead of eating it right away it would drop it … pick it back up … drop it … pick it back up repeatedly, like a cat playing with a mouse.
I was looking through my picture collection but don’t actually have a decent picture of an adult Pied-billed Grebes. However I did go back a few weeks later and spotted a youngster still hanging out at the Lake. Perhaps in my 2016 collection I’ll get some pictures of an adult too.
