American Dipper [Cinclus mexicanus] ~ 2016 #42

In March I took a road trip up to Lillooet for a quick day trip. I didn’t have a lot of time to bird but I stopped to one of my favorite areas, the Naxwit picnic area, to see what I could find. As I stood at the bank of the spawning channel I could see this dipper a short distance away. When I first saw this aquatic songbird a few years ago it was very shy and I had to hide and snap shots from a distance. I thought for sure I’d spook this one away too.

However I was pleasantly surprised when the little Dipper actually made it’s way across the stream, closer to me.

I must have sat/stood there for about a half an hour just watching this cutie dip into the water searching for his food. And, as is normal for these birds, he was bobbing up and down like he was doing a little dance. He’d hop to one area, dip in for a second and come back up and do his little dance for a minute or two and repeat the process. I know this may sound weird but for that period of time I was watching him all was good in the world. 🙂
