Bufflehead [Bucephala albeola] ~ 2017 #05

Joining the mallards in the frozen pond were some Buffleheads. The males are so handsome with their iridescent head with the big white splotch. The females are so tiny, and today there were about 5 females hanging out together while a few males were lingering close by.

The Bufflehead ducks are actually monogamous and will return the the same mate a couple of years in a row. [allaboutbirds.org]
